Nearly 200 taken from sect's West Texas ranch

ELDORADO -- After several anxious hours late Saturday, tensions appeared to be easing at the YFZ Ranch in West Texas as state troopers streamed past checkpoints and escorted another busload of girls from the secretive polygamist sect's compound.

Earlier Saturday, officials said they had removed 137 children and 46 women from the ranch. Investigators said they planned to keep searching until every child was accounted for at the YFZ (Yearn For Zion) Ranch.

The second full day of searching at the property had investigators going building to building in the hunt for more children. State officials have blocked access to the ranch since Thursday in response to a report of physical abuse of a 16-year-old girl, law enforcement officials said Friday.

2006 - In June, Warren Jeffs is placed on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list. He is arrested in August during a routine traffic stop outside Las Vegas.

2007 - Jeffs is sentenced to two life sentences for the arranged marriage of a 14-year-old girl to her 19-year-old cousin.

2008 - Authorities enter the compound outside Eldorado.

The family of slain 7-year-old Hser Nay Moo fled an authoritarian regime in Burma and spent 20 years as refugees in a camp in Thailand before arriving in Utah last summer.

More than 2 million Burmese, primarily ethnic minorities, have left since military leaders seized the impoverished country, now called Myanmar, in the 1980s, according to Human Rights Watch.

The Wah family are members of the Karen minority ethnic group. Karen villages were destroyed as part of the State Peace and Development Council's plan of "forcibly relocating" minorities, especially in areas with active insurgents or targeted for development, the international rights organization charges.

Utah has welcomed about 400 Burmese refugees, which include members of the Karen and Chin ethnic groups, since last year. Most have been in camps more than 10 years, according to Aden Batar with Catholic Community Services, one of Utah's resettlement agencies.

Camp conditions typically include limited schooling for children, no running water and primitive living conditions.

Man Who Confessed to Causing Death of Missing 7-Year-Old Utah Girl Knew Her Family

SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah — The man who admitted to keeping a missing 7-year-old girl against her will in his apartment and later killing her knew the girl's family, police said.

Esar Met, 21, was booked on charges of aggravated murder, kidnapping and evidence tampering after confessing to the crime.

Police on Tuesday night found the body of Hser Nay Moo, who disappeared Monday from the apartment complex after an argument with her 10-year-old brother. Hser's body was found in the bathroom of Met's basement apartment, which is in the same complex where her family lives, MyFOXUtah reported.

Hser was killed within an hour of when she left her home, South Salt Lake Police Chief Chris Snyder said at a press conference Wednesday.

Hser went to Met's apartment, where she often played, according to police.

"We do not know how she got in, whether or not she was invited in or whether or not she asked to go in," Snyder said.

Met hid the body and left the apartment after a physical altercation with Hser that led to her death, Snyder said. Snyder would not release Hser's cause of death or if she was sexually assaulted.

The South Salt Lake Police are looking for Hser Nay Moo (pronounced Sin-Na-Moo), a 7-year-old Asian girl. She is 3 feet 8 inches tall, 45 pounds, with long black hair, and is missing her two front teeth. She was last seen wearing a pink coat, blue jeans and black and pink sneakers. Hser Nay Moo was last seen Monday at 2 P.M. in the area of 2250 South 500 East.

The daring New York Times photojournalist whose story became the basis of "The Killing Fields" - and the inspiration behind his "one-person crusade" to tell the world about the Cambodian genocide - died Sunday.

Dith Pran, 65, who suffered from pancreatic cancer, was best known for his work with Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Sydney Schanberg covering the murderous 1975- 1979 Khmer Rouge reign that killed as many as 2 million Cambodians.

Among the dead were 50 of Pran's own relatives - his father, his sister, three brothers and their families.

In a letter to Times staffers Sunday after Pran's death in a Jersey hospital, Executive Editor Bill Keller called Pran a hero.

"Pran reminds us of a special category of journalistic heroism - the local partner, the stringer, the interpreter . . . who knows the ropes, who makes your work possible, who often becomes your friend, who may save your life, who shares little of the glory, and who risks so much more than you do," Keller wrote.

Schanberg has credited Pran with saving his life and the lives of other journalists for insisting that he come along when the group was taken captive.

When Schanberg received the 1976 Pulitzer Prize, he accepted on behalf of Pran, who was in prison in Cambodia, where he endured four years of torture until fleeing to Thailand in 1979.

His reunion there with Schanberg was recreated in the 1984 Academy Award-winning movie "The Killing Fields."

"There was no way I could have done the work I did without him," Schanberg told Reuters. "We became more than friends. We became brothers."

Pran followed Schanberg back to New York and was hired by The Times, where colleagues Sunday celebrated his kindness and joy for life.

Two Virginia teenagers have been charged with several felonies in connection with a shooting spree along Interstate 64.

Authorities believe a pair of troublemaking teens were behind a series of random shootings in an area where memories of the Washington-area sniper shootings six years ago are still fresh.

One of the suspects, Slade Allen Woodson, 19, of Afton, Va., was taken into custody Friday morning. The other has been identified only as a 16-year-old boy from Crozet, Va.

They each face 10 felony counts that include malicious wounding and maliciously shooting at an occupied vehicle.

"We've taken some mighty big steps toward the resolution of this," Flaherty said at a news conference Friday. "Everyone can, I think, rest compared to the state that we were in overnight."

Investigators said they now believe the shootings that slightly injured two drivers were part of a long night of random gunfire in which the pair also shot at a credit union and a residence.

Woodson was charged in the shootings at the home and the credit union, as well as shootings along the Interstate 64 highway. He and the other teen were charged with two felony counts of malicious wounding, one count of attempted malicious wounding, two counts of the use of a firearm in a felony and five counts of maliciously shooting at an occupied vehicle.

State and county police searched Yonder Hill Farm near Crozet in Albemarle County just before 5 a.m. Friday. Another person confronted them with a handgun and was shot by a county law enforcement officer, police said. Woodson was taken into custody, and the man was taken to a hospital. It wasn't immediately clear whether the other person was the 16-year-old.

RICHMOND, Va.(AP) — Shell casings recovered near a series of six highway shootings in Virginia match casings found inside a suspect's vehicle, state police said Saturday.

The random shootings along Interstate 64 and potshots taken at a credit union and a home early Thursday led investigators to shut down a 20-mile stretch of the highway between Waynesboro and Charlottesville, reopening it around dawn. Two people were slightly injured.

The shootings stirred memories of the Washington-area sniper shootings six years ago that killed 10 people.

The ballistic analysis by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives linked shell casings from a Ruger .22-caliber magnum rifle to casings found near the interstate and in a 1974 AMC Gremlin owned by Slade Allen Woodson, 19, of Afton. The weapon was seized at a farm in Crozet where Woodson was arrested Friday. Authorities also charged a 16-year-old from Crozet whose name was not released.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — An embattled former bank executive committed suicide by crashing his van after killing his wife and making failed attempts to asphyxiate their four children in a garage, then slaying them individually, authorities said Tuesday.

Steven Sueppel, who had been charged with embezzlement, was missing after his family's bodies were discovered Monday morning. His van was found wrecked and ablaze on Interstate 80 about nine miles away, and police said they used dental records to identify the burned body inside as Sueppel's.

Sueppel left a long note in the family's kitchen addressed to no one in particular. He also left voice mail messages at the family's home, at the bank where he once worked and at the law office of his father and brother.

One of the messages indicated Sueppel believed his family was in heaven, Steffen said.

"He did indicate in his note that ever since his problems came to light that he was having trouble dealing with this issue, but again no specific incident or cause was identified as to why it happened now," Steffen said. "He apologized ... numerous times."

Police identified the children as Ethan, 10; Seth, 8; Mira, 5; and Eleanor, 3.

Court records show that Steven Sueppel, 42, was indicted last month on charges of stealing about $560,000 from Hills Bank and Trust in Johnson County, where he was vice president and controller.

He pleaded not guilty to embezzlement and money laundering in U.S. District Court and was released on a $250,000 personal bond. The government was also seeking the forfeiture of the money he was accused of stealing.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A fishing boat sank off Alaska's Aleutian Islands today, leaving four crew members including the captain dead and another missing, the Coast Guard said.

Forty-two of the 47 crew members on board the Seattle-based Alaska Ranger were rescued, but the search continued for the missing person, said Chief Petty Officer Barry Lane.

The 184-foot vessel started taking on water shortly before 3 a.m. after losing control of its rudder 120 miles west of Dutch Harbor, which is on Unalaska Island.

In a statement, the ship's owner, the Fishing Company of Alaska, said it did "not have sufficient information to determine why the vessel foundered."

Seas with up to 8-foot waves and 25-knot winds were reported at the time the ship sank, Lane said. The Coast Guard was investigating the cause of the sinking, he said.

The company identified those killed as ship's captain Eric Peter Jacobsen, chief engineer Daniel Cook, mate David Silveira and crewman Byron Carrillo.

"They were incredibly brave, hard-working men. Our hearts are broken," the company said. The men's ages and hometowns were not released.

The Coast Guard also told harbor officials to have an ambulance ready, but didn't specify the degree or nature of any injuries, Harvey said.

"I figure there's quite a bit of hypothermia going on," he said.

The Alaska Ranger is owned by Seattle-based Fishing Company of Alaska.

DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, Calif. — Bone-white stretches of salt, leached up from the lifeless soil, lay like a shroud over the high desert where a paranoid Charles Manson holed up after an orgy of murder nearly four decades ago.

Now, as then, few venture into this alkaline wilderness — gold-diggers, outlaws, loners content to live and let live.

But a determined group of outsiders recently made the trek. They were leading forensic investigators searching for new evidence of death — clues pointing to possible decades-old clandestine graves.

And the results of just-completed followup tests suggest bodies could indeed be lying beneath the parched ground. The test findings — described in detail to The Associated Press, which had accompanied the site search — conclude there are two likely clandestine grave sites at Barker Ranch, and one additional site that merits further investigation.

Next step, the ad hoc investigators urge: Dig.

For years, rumors have swirled about other possible Manson family victims — hitchhikers who visited them at the ranch and were not seen again, runaways who drifted into the camp then fell out of favor.

Last month, equipped with cutting-edge forensic technology, the investigators assembled in the ghost town of Ballarat for a 20-mile ride in all-terrain vehicles to the ranch.

The team included two national lab researchers carrying instruments to detect chemical markers of human decomposition, a police investigator with a cadaver-seeking dog, and an anthropologist armed with a magnetic resonance reader.

Suspects in UNC Death Had Criminal Past

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — A teenager's arrest Thursday ended a violent crime spree, authorities said, that included the slaying of a graduate student at Duke University and the University of North Carolina's student body president.

Police tracked Laurence Alvin Lovette Jr. to a Durham home, where he surrendered before dawn. He is charged with first-degree murder in the college students' deaths.

Court records show that Lovette, while on probation, had been arrested several times and charged with felonies ranging from burglary to car theft during the months between the two slayings. He was released on bond in those cases and court hearings were pending.

A manhunt started after Eve Carson, 22, a popular student leader at UNC, was found shot death last week on a street about a mile from the campus in nearby Chapel Hill.

Tips generated by several ATM and convenience store surveillance photos led to charges against Lovette, who police said appeared to be driving Carson's Toyota Highlander, and a second suspect in the back seat.

Police have not said whether they think Lovette or the second man charged in her death, 21-year-old Demario James Atwater, pulled the trigger.

Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez said while investigators worked on Carson's death, Lovette became a suspect in the death of Abhijit Mahato, 29, who was found shot to death in January inside his apartment a few block south of Duke's campus. His wallet, cell phone and iPod had been taken.

Mahato, originally of Tatangar, India, was a doctoral student at Duke in computational mechanics.

Suspect charged in UNC student's death; second sought

(CNN) -- One suspect has been charged and police are hunting for another in connection with the killing of University of North Carolina student Eve Carson, police said Wednesday.

Demario James Atwater, 21, was arrested early Wednesday at a residence in Durham, North Carolina.

Authorities were watching the home after receiving a tip that Atwater was inside.
He was charged with first-degree murder in Carson's death.

Atwater is believed to be the man in a convenience-store photograph released by police.
A second suspect, Lawrence Alvin Lovett Jr., 17, is being sought in Carson's death, police said.
He also faces a first-degree murder charge.

Lovett could be armed and dangerous, police told CNN affiliate WRAL.

Police believe Lovett was the man seen in a surveillance-camera photo possibly using Carson's card at an ATM, Chapel Hill Police Chief Brian Curran said.

The pictures showed a young man wearing a hooded sweatshirt and baseball cap. There also appeared to be a large, shadowy form of another person in the back seat of the vehicle, which may have been Carson's SUV.

Police believe Atwater was in the back seat, Curran said.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A convicted killer recently released from prison was charged Saturday with fatally shooting his brother during an argument and then killing five witnesses, including two of his brother's children, police said.

Three remaining children were critically wounded in the attack last Sunday, but one of them was able to tell investigators about their assailant, an arrest warrant affidavit said.

Jessie L. Dotson, 33, was arrested on Friday — five days after the six bodies were discovered in a small rental house in a rough neighborhood called Binghampton. The affidavit said Dotson admitted to the killings.

"He tried to kill everyone in the house. He thought everyone in the house was dead," police Lt. Joe Scott said.

Dotson was charged with six counts of first-degree murder and three counts of attempted first-degree murder, police said. Among those killed was Dotson's brother, Cecil, 30, who was the father of all the children, ages 9 to 2 months.

Also killed were Hollis Seals, 33, Shindri Roberson, 25, and Marissa Rene Williams, 26, the mother of four of Cecil Dotson's children. Police identified the dead children as Cemario Dotson, 4, and Cecil Dotson, 2.

The surviving children remain under police custody at a children's hospital, but police declined to reveal their identities or their conditions.

One of the children "implicated Jessie Dotson as the person responsible," an arrest warrant affidavit said.

The mother of the man charged with killing an Auburn University student said her son was an Iraq war veteran who was changed after his service, and offered an apology to the freshman's family.

Catherine Williams, the mother of suspect Courtney Lockhart, made the apology to Lauren Burk's family in an interview with Columbus, Ga., television station WTVM.

"I am sorry that Courtney did that. ... First let me say I'm sorry to the Burk family for Courtney taking, taking their child. ... My heart goes out to her family," Williams said in the tearful interview.

But she also said her son did not confess anything to her.

The 23-year-old Lockhart has been charged with capital murder in the death of an 18-year-old Auburn University student and could face the death penalty if convicted.

Lockhart also faces charges of kidnapping, robbery and attempted rape, Auburn Assistant Police Chief Thomas Dawson said at a news conference. He affirmed that authorities have strong evidence to prove that Lockhart killed Lauren Burk, a freshman at Auburn University.

Dawson declined to identify the evidence or potential motives for the crimes, and he wouldn't say conclusively whether Burk had been targeted or was the victim of a random crime.

Police arrest man in killing of Auburn student

(CNN) -- Police have arrested a man in the killing of Auburn University freshman Lauren Burk, who died this week, according to the Auburn, Alabama, assistant police chief.

Courtney Larrell Lockhart, 23, of Smiths, Alabama, is charged with capital murder during a kidnapping, capital murder during a robbery, and capital murder during an attempted rape, Tommy Dawson said Saturday.

The Phenix City Police Department took Lockhart into custody on Friday, police said. Phenix City is about 35 miles southeast of Auburn.

Investigators have the suspect's photo, which was enhanced with the help of NASA, Dawson said, according to The Associated Press. Dawson said the photo matched Lockhart, but he declined to say how police got the photo or why they think Lockhart is linked to the crime.

Burk, 18, from Marietta, Georgia, was found shot on North College Street, a few miles north of campus, on Tuesday night. She died later at a hospital.

Minutes after police responded to the call reporting an injured person and found Burk, they found a car -- which turned out to be Burk's -- on fire in a campus parking lot.

The university's Web site said memorial services for Burk are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at a Marietta church and synagogue, and a campus-wide memorial service will be held Monday.

The site carried a message from Burk's father, James, which said: "The Burk family was so proud to have Lauren as an Auburn University student. We want to extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation for Auburn University, the city of Auburn and the Auburn Police Department. We feel very close to your community. We appreciate what everyone is doing for us and Lauren."

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — North Carolina police on Saturday released two ATM surveillance pictures of a "person of interest" in the case of a slain university student and said it appeared to be a random killing.

Chapel Hill Police Chief Brian Curran, speaking at a news conference, described the pictures as "our biggest break so far" in the investigation into the death of Unversity of North Carolina student body president Eve Carson.

Police have yet to identify the person in the photos, who apparently used an ATM card belonging to Carson, a senior who was shot to death early Wednesday on a city street not far from campus.


Curran said police have circulated the pictures with police departments in North Carolina, hoping their officers can help identify the suspect. The ATM photos show a young man in a baseball cap and hooded sweat shirt driving a sport utility vehicle that may be Carson's Toyota Highlander, Curran said.

Police also released a photo of a baseball cap the suspect appears to be wearing in both of the surveillance pictures. Curran declined to say when the pictures were taken.

Carson was last seen around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, when she stayed behind at home to study while her roommates went out for the night. She was known to work late at her campus office, and Curran has said Saturday that "she may have mentioned something about needing to print off papers later that night."

But Curran has said police don't have any evidence that she made it to her office. There were no signs of forced entry to her home and police said they are not aware of anyone who might have been angry with Carson. There are no indications she had been sexually assaulted.

TACOMA -- Seven years after the radical Earth Liberation Front firebombed the University of Washington's Center for Urban Horticulture, a federal jury on Thursday convicted the accused lookout, Briana Waters, of two counts of arson.

A former Evergreen State College student, Waters, 32, had been charged with five criminal counts, including conspiracy and use and possession of a destructive device, which could have put her behind bars for at least 35 years.

The jury deadlocked on those counts, and Waters now faces five to 20 years in prison.

Afterward, one juror said Waters' 3-year-old daughter weighed on the deliberations, which took four days. A pretty, fresh-faced violin teacher from Oakland, Calif., Waters had repeatedly referred to her daughter, Kalliope, when testifying that she did not help plan the fire and was not at the crime scene.

"It was clearly emotional," said the juror, who declined to give his name. "At the time (of the crime), she didn't have a daughter, but now she does."

Prosecutors said the burning of the research center was part of a six-year arson rampage by regional members of ELF and another group, the Animal Liberation Front. Their fires, which began in 1996, caused $20 million in damage, destroying a Colorado ski resort, sport utility vehicles and genetic engineering labs.

Of the five people charged in the UW fire, Waters was the only person to stand trial. Two defendants pleaded guilty and testified against her for reduced sentences. Another became a fugitive. The fourth killed himself soon after he was arrested.

Detectives in three states on Thursday were hunting for clues in the mysterious shooting murders — a day apart — of two college coeds from Georgia, and sources have told FOX News that an arrest may be imminent in one of the killings.

Police in Auburn, Ala., said Thursday afternoon they are pursuing promising leads as they try to identify who killed 18-year-old Auburn University freshman Lauren A. Burk of Marietta on Tuesday night near campus.

Local reporters told FOX News' Greta Van Susteren Thursday evening that authorities are said to be close to an arrest, though no suspects have been named.

WBRC's Dave Bondy told Van Susteren that Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones had said investigators are investigating the possibility Burk knew her attacker, but the sheriff wouldn't say whether police had confirmed that detail.

Burk was found with a single gunshot wound to the head around 9 p.m. Tuesday on Alabama Highway 147, three miles off campus. Police said her Honda Civic was discovered 20 minutes later engulfed in flames at the campus.

Carson, of Athens, Ga., died from multiple bullet wounds, including one to the head. After responding to reports of gunfire, police discovered Carson lying dead in an intersection in a Chapel Hill residential neighborhood close to the university.

TACOMA -- Randi Miller was sitting on her bed. Her husband, Timothy Miller, was in the shower when they both were shot to death Saturday night inside their Parkland home, according to court papers filed Monday in Pierce County Superior Court.

The 22-year-old woman now held on suspicion of aggravated murder and kidnapping -- of the couple's 6-month-old girl -- left the Millers' home after the shooting, bought muriatic acid at Home Depot and returned, the affidavit of probable cause said. She tried but failed to destroy the bodies in a bathtub, a court affidavit said.

The suspect, Spc. Ivette Gonzalez Davila, a member of Fort Lewis' I Corps color guard, shackled and dressed in an orange Pierce County Jail inmate's uniform, appeared at a preliminary bail hearing before Superior Court Judge Ronald Culpepper on Monday. Davila is to be arraigned Wednesday afternoon.

Culpepper ordered Davila held without bond for investigation of aggravated first-degree murder in the deaths of the Millers, who also were active duty Fort Lewis soldiers, and the kidnapping of their baby. Timothy Miller, 27, of Nevada and Randi Miller, 25, who was believed to be from the East Coast, served at the post's Madigan Army Medical Center.

Investigators Say Family Opposition to Boyfriend

May Be Behind Brutal Texas Murders

ALBA, Texas — Investigators say a bloody attack on a rural East Texas family's home may have resulted from family opposition to a daughter's boyfriend.

Rains County Sheriff department confirmed Sunday a 16-year-old girl is one of four suspects being held for the violent murders of her mother and two brothers.

The girl, whose name is being withheld due to her age, is the girlfriend of one of the suspects, investigators revealed. Neighbors told MyFOXDFW.com that the girl's parents, Terry and Penny Caffey, were trying to break up the couple.

The teen was found by police early Sunday hiding at the home of one of the suspects, although it was not clear from the police account which of them she was dating or where she has been hiding.

The four suspects, which include the unidentified teen, 19-year-old Charlie James Wilkinson, 18-year-old Bobbi Gale Johnson and Charles Allen Wade, 20, went before the Justice of the Peace and were formally charged Sunday morning with three counts of capital murder each, police said. All remained in Rains County Jail with bonds set at $1.5 million.

The scene of the attack was about 20 acres of pine-canopied, remote woodland on a narrow gravel road with just two other homes between the small East Texas towns of Emory and Alba. That is about 60 miles northeast of Dallas in Rains County, the second-smallest county in Texas.

Mrs. Caffey, 37, was killed along with her two sons, Tyler Caffey, 8, and Mathew Caffey 13, according to police. All had been shot and stabbed multiple times. Terry Caffey was in critical but stable condition Sunday in East Texas Medical Center in Tyler, where he was being treated for a gunshot wound to the head.

ATLANTA (AP) — The rap star Juvenile is "shocked and devastated" by the shooting death of his young daughter, the girl's mother and another child, his manager said Saturday.

The 32-year-old rapper is still trying to cope with the death of 4-year-old Jelani; her mother, 39-year-old Joy Deleston; and the woman's daughter Micaiah, 11, whose bodies were found Thursday night in their home, said manager Aubrey Francis.

"It really shocked him and devastated him to the point where I've never seen him before," Francis said. "Right now he is relaxing and trying to grasp everything of what has happened."

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Anthony Tyrone Terrell Jr. is being held in the DeKalb County jail, charged in the deaths of his mother — a Gwinnett County sheriff's deputy — and siblings at the home near Lawrenceville, outside Atlanta. He was arrested Friday.

Deleston brought a paternity lawsuit in 2004, claiming that Juvenile, whose real name is Terius Gray, was Jelani's father, Gwinnett County court records show. Both parties later agreed Juvenile was the father.

Because of his age, prosecutors cannot seek the death penalty against Terrell. A preliminary hearing will be set next week in Gwinnett County Superior Court, prosecutor Danny Porter said.
