CBS/ AP) A South Florida man was charged with first-degree murder Wednesday in the killing of a federal agent outside a busy post office.

"We did it!" were the first words at a late night news conference Wednesday when police announced that they had charged James Patrick Wonder of Miramar with the murder of Federal Agent Donald Pettit, according to CBS affiliate WFOR-TV in Miami.

"We told you we would get you," Pembroke Pines Deputy Chief Mike Segarra said as officers and supporters burst into sustained applause.

Wonder, 65, was detained without incident after a SWAT team and dozens of officers surrounded a shopping center in this community about 10 miles from Fort Lauderdale, said Pembroke Pines Deputy Police Chief Mike Segarra.

More than 400 law enforcement officers and at least two Blackhawk helicopters had been scouring South Florida for the suspect in the killing of 52-year-old customs agent Donald Pettit.

The agent was with his 12-year-old daughter when he was shot during a fight Tuesday morning in a post office's parking lot in nearby Pembroke Pines.

BALTIMORE - Authorities are actively investigating the possibility that accused kidnapper Clark Rockefeller is concealing a violent past, after his fingerprints provided an unusual, but still unconfirmed, link to a killing in California from many years ago, according to two law enforcement officials.

Rockefeller's fingerprints, taken after his capture here Saturday, were linked to an out-of-state license application under a different name, presumably yet another alias, those officials said. That name, in turn, is on a list of people wanted in a homicide case in California, according to the officials.

"A fingerprint connected him to a license application, and an alias on the application connected him to a murder in California," one of the two officials said yesterday. Both officials provided information to the Globe on condition they not be named, because the investigation is ongoing.

Rockefeller has already gone to extraordinary lengths to conceal his past, even refusing to provide proof of his identity in his 2007 divorce case, a decision that cost him custody of the daughter he played an active role in raising.

Yesterday, Rockefeller, dressed in wrinkled khakis and a baby-blue polo shirt and restrained by handcuffs and shackles, was escorted into a Baltimore courtroom, his first public appearance since his arrest Saturday afternoon. He agreed to waive extradition and return to Boston to face charges of kidnapping his 7-year-old daughter, Reigh Storrow Mills Boss.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Mary Winkler, the woman convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the 2006 shooting death of her minister husband, has taken custody of her three daughters, one of her lawyers said Monday.

Rachael Putnam, a custody attorney, said the former minister's wife picked the girls up Friday from the slain man's parents, Dan and Diane Winkler.

"She is absolutely overjoyed," Putnam said. The lawyer said the children will live with Winkler at her home near McMinnville, about 60 miles southeast of Nashville.

Winkler, 34, was convicted of voluntary manslaughter last year for shooting her husband, 31-year-old Church of Christ minister Matthew Winkler, at their Selmer home in March 2006.

She declined an on-camera interview with Channel 4 on Monday because she said she didn't want her kids involved. Channel 4's Cara Kumari asked her whether she was happy to have custody, and she pointed to a big smile on her face.

Sentenced to three years in prison, she received probation for most of it, spending only 12 days in jail after her sentencing and two months in a mental health facility before being released.

The children -- ages 11, 9 and 3 -- had previously been living with their grandparents and had court-ordered visits with their mother.

"It should be seen as a sign that the family is healing," Putnam said of the custody arrangement. "It's a good thing for everyone."

Putnam said a court order giving Winkler custody has not been completed, but she said the custody case between the grandparents and Winkler will eventually be concluded.

A southern California family is standing by the wife and mother who lived under a false name and with a colossal secret: Susan M. LeFevre escaped from a Plymouth prison 32 years ago.

But Michigan authorities are painting a different picture from LeFevre's account that her drug involvement was minor and she jumped a barbed wire fence to escape from prison out of fear for her safety.

The former Thomas Township resident, arrested at 19 for taking $600 from an undercover officer during a heroin drug sting in 1974, served about one year of a 10- to 20-year sentence for violating drug laws and conspiring to commit that crime when she walked away from the Robert Scott Correctional Facility at 21.

Her husband of 23 years, Alan Walsh, said his family was blindsided and grief-stricken by the revelation that Marie Day, the woman he fell in love with and who bore his three children, had hidden a criminal past.

LeFevre's crimes likely caused many and serious ripples in the criminal underworld. he said. A state trooper testified LeFevre was a ringleader of a drug-trafficking operation, Marlan said.

"She had people working for her. She was making a large profit," Marlan said. "She wore nice clothing and rented an apartment. When she was arrested, she had $600 in cash, paraphernalia for cutting heroin, and photographs that proved she was acquainted with people higher up in the Saginaw drug world.

Michigan fugitive caught 33 years later

A Detroit woman who escaped from a Michigan prison 33 years ago was arrested in Tennessee on Friday morning, according to U.S. Marshals.

Rebecca Hatcher, 57, was arrested on her front porch in Camden, Tenn., without incident, said Deputy U.S. Marshal Matthew Batcheller. Hatcher is being held in the Madison County jail, he said, and will be moved to Michigan by the end of the month to face prosecutors.

Hatcher had been on the run since 1975 after climbing the 12-foot fence of the Robert Scott Correctional Facility in Plymouth Township. Hatcher, who later married and had a daughter, was serving a 1- to 15-year prison sentence for unarmed robbery at the time of her escape. She had only served eight months of the sentence, Batcheller said.

Though Hatcher ran away from her past, it did not disappear. A butterfly tattoo from prison photos taken in 1975 confirmed her identity for authorities, who took her into county jail at about 10 a.m. Friday.

The search is over for a high-society man accused of abducting his 7-year-old daughter, as police announced Saturday afternoon that Clark Rockefeller was in custody in Maryland.

Police tracked Rockefeller to a Baltimore apartment with a tip from the public and arrested him after luring him outside with a ruse about his yacht, Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis said Saturday evening at a news conference.

The daughter, Reigh Boss, was with her father in the apartment and was found unharmed.

Preacher killed wife, stuffed body in freezer, police say.

(CNN) -- An evangelical preacher killed his wife several years ago and stuffed her body in a freezer after she caught him abusing their daughter, according to police and court documents.

Anthony Hopkins, 37, was arrested Monday night at the Inspirational Tabernacle Church of God in Christ in Jackson, Alabama, just after he had delivered a sermon to a congregation that included his seven other children, officials said.

He faces charges including murder, rape, sodomy, sexual abuse and incest.

Hopkins was denied bail Thursday when he appeared before Mobile County District Judge George Hardesty. The case is set for arraignment next week, Hardesty's clerk said.

The case began Monday, when the daughter, now 19, went to the Mobile Police Department's Child Advocacy Center and reported that she had been sexually abused by Hopkins since she was 11 years old, according to an affidavit filed in support of a search warrant of the preacher's home in Mobile.

The affidavit related the daughter's story as follows:

Her mother, Arletha Hopkins, 36, caught her father abusing her in a bathroom in November 2004. Afterward, her parents argued, and her mother locked her father out of the house. The father came to the daughter's window and asked her to let him in, and she did so.

The next morning, her father asked her to help him hide her mother's body in the freezer in the laundry room of the home.

The girl said she moved out of the home about two weeks ago and was living with a neighbor. She told police that her mother's body was still in the freezer.

NEW YORK — A man accused of abducting his wife and four young children from a Massachusetts apartment where another woman was found fatally stabbed was arrested Wednesday by police, who said the siblings and their mother were in good health.

The family was found in Brooklyn, the New York Police Department said. State police in Massachusetts and New York had issued Amber Alerts for the children, who range in age from 11 months to 3 years.

In Massachusetts, Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said in a news release that police arrested the father, Rodlyn Petitbois, without incident about 6 p.m. as he walked down a Brooklyn street, and that the children and their mother were found safe in a Brooklyn apartment.

Blodgett said earlier that his office was seeking an arrest warrant for Petitbois on a first-degree murder charge. Blodgett said before the arrest the authorities believed Petitbois to be extremely dangerous and possibly armed.

FAYETTEVILLE - The Fayetteville Police said at a press conference today that a typewriter was seized as evidence from the home of Sergeant Edgar Patino, age 27, who has been charged with first degree murder in the killing of Army Specialist Megan Touma in June.

One reason the Touma case has received national attention was that a letter was sent to the Fayetteville Observer newspaper from someone claiming to be the killer. The letter was written in a similar fashion to those seen in the Zodiac Killer cases in California in the 1960's, which were never solved.

The letter taunted police and claimed to be from someone who was a serial killer.

Chief Bergamine disclosed today at the press conference that there were actually two letters in the case, one sent to the Fayetteville Observer and one sent to the Fayetteville Police Department.

Bergamine called the analysis of the letters "critical to this case."

"The letters were used to try and throw off detectives," said lead investigator Joshua Carter of the Fayetteville Police Department. "We have evidence linking the suspect to the letters."

"We felt this letter was typed...to throw us off," concurred Chief Bergamine.

The Fayetteville Police said that they believe a typewriter seized from Patino's home is a key piece of evidence. The letters written to the police and the Fayetteville Observer newspaper were typed on a typewriter.

Suspect in Pregnant North Carolina Soldier's Death Was Baby's Father

A Fort Bragg soldier was arraigned Wednesday on first-degree murder charges in the death of a colleague who North Carolina police say was pregnant with his unborn baby.

Army Sgt. Edgar Patino, 27, told Cumberland County, N.C., Judge Laura Devane that he understood the charges against him and would ask that the court appoint him an attorney.

Patino appeared wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, his hands cuffed in front of him. Devane set his next hearing for Aug. 20.

Earlier Wednesday, police in Fayetteville, N.C., said they zeroed in on Patino after gathering evidence that he wrote a letter to a local newspaper claiming he killed Army Spc. Megan L. Touma, whose decomposing body was found in a motel bathtub.

Among that evidence is a typewriter taken from Patino's residence that investigators say was used to compose the note, Carter told reporters Wednesday. Patino allegedly purchased the typewriter the day before the letter was mailed.

Patino of Hope Mills, N.C., is being held without bond since his arrest at his home Tuesday night. He was arraigned at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Authorities said he is married, which Touma only learned shortly before her death, and admitted to fathering her unborn baby.

Patino also acknowledged being in Touma's hotel room June 13, the last day her hotel room key was used, police said.

Authorities charged Patino with first-degree murder after they took him into custody without incident about 8 p.m., but did not release a motive.

"Right now, the motive is going to be held close due to the fact that this is an ongoing investigation," Carter said.

FAYETTVILLE, N.C. — A Fort Bragg soldier was charged with first-degree murder Tuesday in the death of a pregnant colleague whose partially decomposed body was found in a motel bathtub more than a month ago, police said.

Edgar Patino, 27, of nearby Hope Mills, was arrested at his home without incident just after 8 p.m. in the death of Army Spc. Megan L. Touma, said Fayetteville police watch commander Lt. Lars Paul. Paul said Patino was stationed at Fort Bragg but couldn't provide his rank or unit.

No further details were immediately available, but police have scheduled a 11 a.m. news conference Wednesday.

Affidavit: Man admits church shooting, says liberals should die

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (CNN) -- A man accused of fatally shooting two adults and wounding seven others at a Knoxville church told police the church's liberal teachings prompted him to attack, according to court papers.

Jim David Adkisson told investigators all liberals should be killed and admitted he shot people Sunday morning at Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, according to a search warrant affidavit obtained by CNN affiliate WBIR.

Also, a four-page letter police found in Adkisson's vehicle indicated he was motivated by frustration over being unable to obtain a job, authorities said Monday.

Police said Adkisson, 58, of Powell, Tennessee, walked into the church's sanctuary during a children's musical performance and fired a shotgun before being overpowered by congregants and arrested. Adkisson -- who police said wasn't a member of the church -- has been charged with one count of first-degree murder.

Neighbors said Adkisson was quiet and kept to himself.

"He never went anywhere. He never had anybody over. Just, it was really quiet. He rode a motorcycle and you know he would go out on the weekends on his motorcycle, but other than that, you never heard from him," Melissa Coker told WVLT-TV.

Coker told the AP that Adkisson had been a truck driver, but she didn't think he'd been working steadily in the past six months.

"He's just a really, really nice guy," Coker told the AP.

Adkisson's landlord said she did not know him well enough to make any comments on his character but said he was a good tenant who paid his bills, according to CNN affiliate WBIR-TV.
Bail was set at $1 million late Sunday.

Police said people were recording videos of the children's performance when the shooting happened, and investigators were reviewing the videos. Information on what, if anything, the videos show of the shooting wasn't immediately available.

The 12-page Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office report that recounts the 16-year-old's recollections does not name her or her 7-month-old brother. But it paints a vivid sequence of events leading up to the burst of violence in the gravel driveway at 43042 E. Arkansas Place, the home where Davidson lived with his family, and where he ran his business before his world unraveled.

Thursday began with a phone call. Davidson told his wife that he was going to turn himself in to authorities. But he wanted to see his family first. Hill was reluctant, but she agreed to bring the children and meet him at the Home Depot at 6000 S. Gun Club Road.

It was about 9:45 a.m. Hill and the children were in the Toyota when Davidson pulled up in a beat-up old green car. He muscled his way into the driver's seat of the Toyota, shoving Hill to the passenger side, and drove off.

Bailey, his 3-year-old daughter, sat buckled in a car seat behind him. In the middle of the back seat, facing backward, was the car seat that held his 7-month-old son. Davidson's 16-year-old daughter sat on the passenger side in the back seat.

As he pulled into the driveway leading to their former home, Hill asked him why they were there. Then he stopped, stepped out of the driver's door and pointed the gun at Hill.

She lunged for the gun, but he fired, hitting her in the head. Hill fell dead on the ground outside the passenger door of the Toyota. Then he turned and fired at his oldest daughter, but somehow she squirmed away at just the right instant and the bullet just cut the flesh on the back of her neck. Davidson turned to 3-year-old Bailey, strapped in her car seat and killed her.

By then, the teenager was out the door, running for her life. She hustled about a quarter mile to the closest home, where Denver police officer Jeff Cook, a nine-year veteran, lives.

ORLANDO — The mother of a missing 2-year-old Orlando girl told family that she didn't know the whereabouts of her child in a contentious telephone call from jail released Friday.

Casey Anthony, 22, is being held on $500,000 bond after investigators said she lied to them and did not report daughter Caylee Marie Anthony missing for more than a month.

In the July 16 call released by the Orange County Corrections Department, Caylee's grandmother, Cindy Anthony, complained to her daughter that she wasn't telling her where the toddler was. Casey Anthony responded angrily that she didn't know where the girl was.

"Are you kidding me?" Casey Anthony said.

Cindy Anthony responded, "Don't waste your call to scream and holler at me."
She added that her daughter's incarceration is her own fault.

"You're blaming me that you're sitting in the jail? Blame yourself for telling lies," Cindy Anthony said.

She told a dispatcher that she had just found Casey, who had been missing for a month, as well as the car she was driving, which had been towed. She also expressed concern that her granddaughter was not with Casey.

She called 911 again about an hour later, crying, after she said Casey Anthony finally told her Caylee had been missing for a month.

When she was just 19, Sandeela Kanwal traveled from America to Pakistan for an arranged marriage to a cousin twice her age.

Less than six years later, she was dead — strangled — and her father, Chaudhry Rashid, was arrested by police as the suspect for what some have called an "honor killing."

The United Nations estimates that as many as 5,000 women are murdered in such honor killings each year for offenses like immodesty or refusing an arranged marriage. They may be on the rise in the U.S., as seen anecdotally in Kanwal's death and a handful of other prominent attacks:

• Fifty-year-old Yaser Abdel Said became the focus of a massive manhunt after he allegedly killed his teenage daughters Sarah and Amina — for dating boys against his will.

• Zein Isa, a Palestinian terrorist who lived in St. Louis, was convicted of killing his daughter Palestina in 1989. Investigators say he was furious she had a black boyfriend, went to a school dance and got a job at Wendy's.

• Waheed Mohammad, a 22-year-old immigrant from Afghanistan, was shamed by his sister, who he thought was a "bad Muslim girl."

OLYMPIA - Two adult animals located and radio-collared July 18 in western Okanogan County are wild, gray wolves, genetic tests have confirmed.

After 10 years of conducting wildlife surveys using remote cameras, Conservation Northwest has captured photographs of six wolf pups residing in the North Cascades.

In response to consistent wolf sighting reports in recent years, staff at Conservation Northwest coordinated with agency biologists and local volunteers to place four remote cameras in the North Cascades.

Information from Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) indicates an adult male also has been photographed with a remote camera where the six pups were photographed.

Volunteers conducting a routine camera check Sunday evening (July 20) discovered several images of wolf pups and a recently collared male adult, possibly the sire, said Conservation Northwest officials.

They also recorded sounds of wolf pup howls. The wolf pack, dubbed the "Lookout Pack" by agency scientists, is the first documented, resident wolf pack in Washington State since the 1930s.

Tissue and hair samples were collected from the two animals and submitted for DNA testing to confirm that the animals were pure wolves.

Preliminary results from additional genetic testing indicate the two wolves likely originated from British Columbia-Alberta populations. More comprehensive testing is currently being conducted to determine more specific information.

Radio tracking collars placed on the wolves allow biologists to monitor the animals' location and activity.

BENNETT — Just four days after escaping a federal minimum-security work camp, Internet "Spam King" Eddie Davidson fatally shot his wife and child and wounded a teenage girl before turning the gun on himself.

Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of gunfire south of the small plains town of Bennett about 11:15 a.m. Thursday and found Davidson, 29-year-old Amy Lee Ann Hill and their 3-year-old daughter shot to death.

Davidson's most recent spam business, Power Promoters, was based at his residence near Bennett, about 25 miles east of Denver.

Arapahoe County Undersheriff Mark Campbell said the bodies were found near a Toyota Sequoia sport utility vehicle in the driveway of Davidson's former home. Davidson's body was beside the driver's door, a pistol nearby, and his wife's body fell near the passenger side.

A 3-year-old girl was dead in the vehicle. A boy, about 7 months old, was unharmed in a car seat in the SUV, Campbell said.

A teenage girl, shot in the neck, escaped by running to a neighbor's home, the Sheriff's Office said.

Neighbors said Davidson and his family had moved from the house more than six months ago. The family was known as "the Hills" and "stayed to themselves," a neighbor said.

Media and prosecutors had dubbed Davidson the "Spam King" for years for his prolific, anonymous e-mails promoting a raft of products.

Pleaded guilty to tax evasion

Davidson had pleaded guilty to tax evasion and falsifying information about the sender of e-mail pitches for low-cost, high-risk stocks.

He was ordered in April to pay $714,139 in restitution to the IRS and sentenced to 21 months in the minimum-security federal prison camp in Florence, 90 miles south of Denver.

Casey Anthony does not know where her missing 2-year-old daughter is, but she wants out of jail so she can join the search in finding the girl, defense attorney Jose Baez said at a press conference this afternoon.

Baez, who is representing the 22-year-old mother, said Anthony is "willing to cooperate fully" with law enforcement. But their assistance, he said, should be used to help find Caylee Marie Anthony and not prosecute his client.

Caylee has reportedly been missing since June 9. Anthony was arrested Wednesday after telling Orange County sheriff's detectives a string of lies about her daughter's disappearance.

When asked why his client lied to detectives, Baez said, "I'm aware and I have to save that for her defense."

Baez said he has requested a sketch artist to depict the babysitter, who may have ties to Miami; Bradenton; Gainesville; Charlotte, N.C.; Brooklyn and New York City.

Earlier today, Anthony's mother, Cindy Anthony, told the Orlando Sentinel there may be ties to coastal cities. Anthony said her daughter told several people Caylee was at the beach, and so they are spreading the word to East and Gulf Coast communities.

Padilla said deputies are still operating under the hope that Caylee is alive. He said help from Caylee's mother is key to finding the child but that she has "not done anything to facilitate us locating this child."

A female Fort Bliss soldier survived being beaten and stabbed during a three-day ordeal in which her estranged husband allegedly kidnapped her, taking her as far as Las Vegas before she convinced him to return to Texas to turn himself in to police, authorities announced today.

"It was the best possible case for a horrible situation," Chris Mears, a spokesman for the El Paso Police Department, said at an afternoon news conference. "You have a woman that was viciously assaulted in her apartment and taken against her will, but is here today to tell us about it and can get on with her life."

Clinton Lewis, 34, allegedly attacked his wife, 29-year-old Pfc. Jeneesa Lewis, around 5:15 p.m. Thursday as she entered her apartment near the Texas military base, Mears said.

Authorities say Lewis was waiting for his wife inside her apartment last Thursday evening and kicked her in the face as she walked through the door. He allegedly stabbed her at least twice in the legs with a kitchen knife and threatened to kill her before putting her in his truck and fleeing.

The alleged abductor then drove about 650 miles to Las Vegas, where they checked into a motel. Sometime Saturday night, Mears said, Jeneesa convinced her husband to return to El Paso, and the pair boarded a Texas-bound bus.

Jeneesa was reported missing Friday after the mother of three -- including a 4-year-old son she had with Lewis -- failed to show up for work at Fort Bliss and fellow soldiers went to her apartment to look for her. The unit was locked and police were called. Authorities forced their way into the apartment and found blood stains and evidence of a struggle.

Lewis had followed his wife to Fort Bliss after she joined the military, in part, to escape the abusive relationship, Jeneesa's sister said. He moved into her apartment in Texas and even managed to get his name on her lease, according to Jeneesa's sister.
