Man And His "Hostage" Both Charged After Two-Day Standoff

HANCOCK, MD - Police have charged a South Carolina man and his pregnant girlfriend after a two-day standoff that appeared to be a hostage situation.

Police say James Prevatt III, 26, was not holding his girlfriend hostage. In fact, they say Renee Reynolds, 21, appears to have been a willing participant.

The pair was formally charged early Saturday morning. Prevatt faces various counts of felony theft and drug charges, and for threatening to use an explosive device; Reynolds is facing felony theft charges and conspiracy charges. Police say they expect additional charges will be filed in the near future.

Both are being held at the Washington County Detention Center. Prevatt is being held on $500,000 bond, and Reynolds on $250,000 bond.

SWAT teams moved in on the room just after 7:30 p.m. Friday evening. Officers tasered Prevatt as he opened the hotel room door to get a meal. They also used a small explosive device to knock the back door down.

Officers executed a search warrant in the room, but no weapons were found. They did find drugs and stolen property-- that includes jewelry, electronics, cameras and coins. Police say some of that property was stolen from a Hancock home on August 11th.

It was a .40-caliber Glock.

In their latest effort to solve a double-murder that thus far has neither motive nor suspects, Oklahoma police have revealed the make of one of the weapons used to kill two young girls on a country road nearly 10 weeks ago.

Police say two guns were used to kill 13-year-old Taylor Paschal-Placker and 11-year-old Skyla Jade Whitaker as they took an afternoon walk down County Line Road in Okfuskee County on June 8. It's a "brutal and deliberate" crime that has stymied investigators in this rural area 70 miles south of Tulsa.

"Since we don't have a motive, we just can't look in one direction for a certain person," Jessica Brown, spokeswoman for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, told FOXNews.com. "It's wide open."

In a state that doesn't require gun registration, officials have had to canvas local pawn shops to check sales records for Glocks. They compiled a list of 60 gun owners and tested the weapons of about 40 last weekend. But they still need to test more.

"Here's the only way it's going to help us probably, if someone just bought a gun or they loaned it to someone recently right before the homicides and got it back," Brown said.

Officials said they were checking up with the remaining 20 gun owners to see why they chose not to have their weapons tested. "We just want people to cooperate so we can find this weapon, and then the person who had it in his hand," Brown said.

Suspect Holds Pregnant Woman Hostage at Maryland Motel

HANCOCK, Md. — A burglary suspect wanted in four states remained holed up Thursday in a western Maryland motel, and doctors were standing by in case a woman believed to be his pregnant girlfriend gave birth, police said.

The standoff began around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday when state troopers and sheriff's deputies went to the America's Best Value Inn on Md. 522 in Hancock to arrest 26-year-old James A. Prevatt III, Maryland State police spokesman Greg Shipley said.

Shipley said Prevatt threatened to kill a woman in the room with him and any officers who tried to arrest him.

The woman is thought to be Prevatt's 21-year-old girlfriend, and Shipley said she is believed to be eight- to eight-and-a-half-months pregnant. Authorities don't know if Prevatt is the baby's father. A team of physicians from Johns Hopkins Hospital was standing by to handle any medical emergency, including childbirth, Shipley said.

Troopers and deputies evacuated about 12 of the 20 rooms in the one-story red brick motel where other guests were staying. Md. 522 was blocked in both directions near the motel, where a sign advertises room rates at $45 and up.

Prevatt is wanted in Maryland, South Carolina, Massachusetts and Virginia on burglary and larceny charges, Shipley said. Police did not know if he was armed, but Shipley said some of the burglaries involved the theft of firearms.

ORLANDO, FL -- Casey Anthony was released from the Orange County jail Thursday morning. Her attorney, Jose Baez, held an umbrella over her head as she left along with bounty hunter Leonard Padilla around 10 a.m.

They were surrounded by a throng of screaming reporters and photographers who yelled repeatedly, "Casey, what happened? Did you kill Caylee?" Baez yelled back, "Get away! Get away! Give her a break!" Casey was silent as she was hustled into a waiting black SUV.

She had been in jail for 36 days.

A flurry of behind-the-scenes deal-making came to fruition Wednesday night when a the owner of a Tampa-based bail bond company posted a $500,000 bond for Anthony.

The bond was posted after nearly a week of negotiations involving Padilla, his nephew Tony Padilla, a Texas-based insurance company, and Tampa-based Al Estes Bail Bonds.

Anthony faces charges of child neglect, making false statements, and obstructing an investigation. Police say she lied to them and didn't report 3-year-old Caylee missing for more than a month.

Caylee hasn't been seen since June. Her grandmother reported her missing in July.

Casey Anthony told investigators she gave her daughter to a baby sitter, but they don't believe her.

DALLAS, Texas (AP) -- A body found in a remote area was been identified as the clerk whose abduction from a store in a small North Texas town was recorded by security cameras, authorities said Sunday.

Mindy Daffern, 46, had been missing since Friday from the store her family owns in the city of Scotland, 130 miles northwest of Dallas. Surveillance camera videotape showed her being confronted at gunpoint by an unmasked man who walked her outside the store.

A man suspected in the abduction led investigators to the body Saturday, and Texas Rangers confirmed it was Daffern, Archer County Sheriff Ed Daniels said Sunday.

Wallace Bowman Jr., 30, of Bowie, was being held on charges of aggravated robbery and kidnapping, and Daniels said he is expected to be charged with capital murder. His bail was set at $3 million.

Bowman did not yet have an attorney to speak for him, Daniels said.

Video from one store camera showed a man casually walking into the store and handing Daffern a cup, then pulling out a handgun and pointing it at her face.

Undated_The man police say kidnapped and killed a north Texas convenience store clerk may be connected to two other deaths in the Bowie area late last week.

Jack McGaughey, the district attorney for Montague and Archer Counties, says there was a house fire near Bowie last week that appears to be arson. He said officials found two burned bodies and they suspect homicide.

District Attorney McGaughey says police are investigating possible connections of 30-year-old Wallace Bowman, Jr., to the arson.

McGaughey says Bowman knew the man and woman whose burned bodies were found after the fire. McGaughey says the authorities believe Bowman also lived at the house--near Bowie--for a period of time.

Officials have not named Bowman as a suspect in the arson at this time, but he is a focus of their investigation.

Bowman is in Jack County Jail on charges of aggravated robbery and kidnapping convenience store clerk Mindy Daffern of Scotland, Texas.

'Preppie killer' headed back to prison on drug rap

NEW YORK (AP) -- The "preppie killer" who served 15 years behind bars for strangling a woman in Central Park during what he said was rough sex is headed back to prison for a drug offense.

Robert Chambers pleaded guilty Monday to criminal sale of a controlled substance and assault on a police officer. He and his girlfriend were arrested in October 2007 in an undercover sting at their Manhattan apartment on charges of dealing cocaine.

The district attorney's office said Chambers has been promised 19 years and four months in prison when he is sentenced next month. Chambers will get six years on the assault charge, which will run concurrently, and will have five years of supervision after his release.

A telephone call to Chambers' attorney, Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg, was not immediately returned Monday.

Chambers initially pleaded not guilty and was facing life in prison if convicted after trial. His attorney had planned to present a psychiatric defense at trial, arguing that his brain and judgment were damaged because of years of drug abuse. She had said he was using up to 12 bags of heroin plus other drugs each day at the time of his arrest.

Chambers' girlfriend, Shawn Kovell, admitted in state Supreme Court in December that the two sold narcotics to an undercover detective. Under the terms of her plea deal, she was sent to a drug rehabilitation center, and upon completion of her program she will be allowed to withdraw the guilty plea and plead to a lesser charge so she can receive a sentence of probation.

SALT LAKE CITY (Aug. 9) - A woman who made news around the world when she had five pups cloned from her beloved pit bull Booger looked very familiar to some who saw her picture: She's the same woman who 31 years earlier was accused of abducting a Mormon missionary in England, handcuffing him to a bed and making him her sex slave.

Dog lover Bernann McKinney acknowledged in a telephone call to The Associated Press on Saturday that she is indeed Joyce McKinney, who in 1977 became a British tabloid sensation when she faced charges of unlawful imprisonment in the missionary case. She jumped bail and was never brought to justice.

She and a male accomplice were accused of abducting the 21-year-old missionary as he went door to door, taking him to a rented 17th-century "honeymoon cottage" in Devon and chaining him spread-eagle to a bed with several pairs of mink-lined handcuffs.

In a 1977 court hearing mobbed by the British press, Joyce McKinney said she'd fallen head-over-heels in love with the Mormon man and acknowledged tracking him to England. The mystery of a man calling himself Clark Rockefeller, who is accused of kidnapping his daughter and could have at least a dozen different aliases, may be solved now that a German man identified him as his long-lost brother in a photo.

Alexander Gerhartsreiter said that Rockefeller is his older brother, Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, when shown a photograph by a Boston Herald reporter visiting his house in Upper Bavaria.

"It seems you found my brother," Alexander Gerhartsreiter told the Herald. "It is really a shock."

He said Christian left home as a teenager and cut ties with the family about 20 years ago.

Police have been investigating whether Christian Gerhartsreiter, a German exchange student who lived with two Connecticut families, and Clark Rockefeller are one and the same.

Detectives allege Rockefeller is a con artist who has for decades been traveling across the

United States, concocting different stories and using different aliases in order to live a lavish life.
Among the personas he has adopted are that of a wealthy, educated member of the elite

Rockefeller family and a tenant renting a carriage house in Los Angeles County who mysteriously vanished along with the newlywed owners of the property in what became a cold homicide case.

CBS/ AP) A South Florida man was charged with first-degree murder Wednesday in the killing of a federal agent outside a busy post office.

"We did it!" were the first words at a late night news conference Wednesday when police announced that they had charged James Patrick Wonder of Miramar with the murder of Federal Agent Donald Pettit, according to CBS affiliate WFOR-TV in Miami.

"We told you we would get you," Pembroke Pines Deputy Chief Mike Segarra said as officers and supporters burst into sustained applause.

Wonder, 65, was detained without incident after a SWAT team and dozens of officers surrounded a shopping center in this community about 10 miles from Fort Lauderdale, said Pembroke Pines Deputy Police Chief Mike Segarra.

More than 400 law enforcement officers and at least two Blackhawk helicopters had been scouring South Florida for the suspect in the killing of 52-year-old customs agent Donald Pettit.

The agent was with his 12-year-old daughter when he was shot during a fight Tuesday morning in a post office's parking lot in nearby Pembroke Pines.

BALTIMORE - Authorities are actively investigating the possibility that accused kidnapper Clark Rockefeller is concealing a violent past, after his fingerprints provided an unusual, but still unconfirmed, link to a killing in California from many years ago, according to two law enforcement officials.

Rockefeller's fingerprints, taken after his capture here Saturday, were linked to an out-of-state license application under a different name, presumably yet another alias, those officials said. That name, in turn, is on a list of people wanted in a homicide case in California, according to the officials.

"A fingerprint connected him to a license application, and an alias on the application connected him to a murder in California," one of the two officials said yesterday. Both officials provided information to the Globe on condition they not be named, because the investigation is ongoing.

Rockefeller has already gone to extraordinary lengths to conceal his past, even refusing to provide proof of his identity in his 2007 divorce case, a decision that cost him custody of the daughter he played an active role in raising.

Yesterday, Rockefeller, dressed in wrinkled khakis and a baby-blue polo shirt and restrained by handcuffs and shackles, was escorted into a Baltimore courtroom, his first public appearance since his arrest Saturday afternoon. He agreed to waive extradition and return to Boston to face charges of kidnapping his 7-year-old daughter, Reigh Storrow Mills Boss.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Mary Winkler, the woman convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the 2006 shooting death of her minister husband, has taken custody of her three daughters, one of her lawyers said Monday.

Rachael Putnam, a custody attorney, said the former minister's wife picked the girls up Friday from the slain man's parents, Dan and Diane Winkler.

"She is absolutely overjoyed," Putnam said. The lawyer said the children will live with Winkler at her home near McMinnville, about 60 miles southeast of Nashville.

Winkler, 34, was convicted of voluntary manslaughter last year for shooting her husband, 31-year-old Church of Christ minister Matthew Winkler, at their Selmer home in March 2006.

She declined an on-camera interview with Channel 4 on Monday because she said she didn't want her kids involved. Channel 4's Cara Kumari asked her whether she was happy to have custody, and she pointed to a big smile on her face.

Sentenced to three years in prison, she received probation for most of it, spending only 12 days in jail after her sentencing and two months in a mental health facility before being released.

The children -- ages 11, 9 and 3 -- had previously been living with their grandparents and had court-ordered visits with their mother.

"It should be seen as a sign that the family is healing," Putnam said of the custody arrangement. "It's a good thing for everyone."

Putnam said a court order giving Winkler custody has not been completed, but she said the custody case between the grandparents and Winkler will eventually be concluded.

A southern California family is standing by the wife and mother who lived under a false name and with a colossal secret: Susan M. LeFevre escaped from a Plymouth prison 32 years ago.

But Michigan authorities are painting a different picture from LeFevre's account that her drug involvement was minor and she jumped a barbed wire fence to escape from prison out of fear for her safety.

The former Thomas Township resident, arrested at 19 for taking $600 from an undercover officer during a heroin drug sting in 1974, served about one year of a 10- to 20-year sentence for violating drug laws and conspiring to commit that crime when she walked away from the Robert Scott Correctional Facility at 21.

Her husband of 23 years, Alan Walsh, said his family was blindsided and grief-stricken by the revelation that Marie Day, the woman he fell in love with and who bore his three children, had hidden a criminal past.

LeFevre's crimes likely caused many and serious ripples in the criminal underworld. he said. A state trooper testified LeFevre was a ringleader of a drug-trafficking operation, Marlan said.

"She had people working for her. She was making a large profit," Marlan said. "She wore nice clothing and rented an apartment. When she was arrested, she had $600 in cash, paraphernalia for cutting heroin, and photographs that proved she was acquainted with people higher up in the Saginaw drug world.

A Detroit woman who escaped from a Michigan prison 33 years ago was arrested in Tennessee on Friday morning, according to U.S. Marshals.

Rebecca Hatcher, 57, was arrested on her front porch in Camden, Tenn., without incident, said Deputy U.S. Marshal Matthew Batcheller. Hatcher is being held in the Madison County jail, he said, and will be moved to Michigan by the end of the month to face prosecutors.

Hatcher had been on the run since 1975 after climbing the 12-foot fence of the Robert Scott Correctional Facility in Plymouth Township. Hatcher, who later married and had a daughter, was serving a 1- to 15-year prison sentence for unarmed robbery at the time of her escape. She had only served eight months of the sentence, Batcheller said.

Though Hatcher ran away from her past, it did not disappear. A butterfly tattoo from prison photos taken in 1975 confirmed her identity for authorities, who took her into county jail at about 10 a.m. Friday.

The search is over for a high-society man accused of abducting his 7-year-old daughter, as police announced Saturday afternoon that Clark Rockefeller was in custody in Maryland.

Police tracked Rockefeller to a Baltimore apartment with a tip from the public and arrested him after luring him outside with a ruse about his yacht, Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis said Saturday evening at a news conference.

The daughter, Reigh Boss, was with her father in the apartment and was found unharmed.

Anthony Hopkins was arrested after he delivered his sermon at the Inspirational Tabernacle Church of God.

The Hopkins home is surrounded by police tape after a body was found in the freezer.

Preacher killed wife, stuffed body in freezer, police say.

(CNN) -- An evangelical preacher killed his wife several years ago and stuffed her body in a freezer after she caught him abusing their daughter, according to police and court documents.

Anthony Hopkins, 37, was arrested Monday night at the Inspirational Tabernacle Church of God in Christ in Jackson, Alabama, just after he had delivered a sermon to a congregation that included his seven other children, officials said.

He faces charges including murder, rape, sodomy, sexual abuse and incest.

Hopkins was denied bail Thursday when he appeared before Mobile County District Judge George Hardesty. The case is set for arraignment next week, Hardesty's clerk said.

The case began Monday, when the daughter, now 19, went to the Mobile Police Department's Child Advocacy Center and reported that she had been sexually abused by Hopkins since she was 11 years old, according to an affidavit filed in support of a search warrant of the preacher's home in Mobile.

The affidavit related the daughter's story as follows:

Her mother, Arletha Hopkins, 36, caught her father abusing her in a bathroom in November 2004. Afterward, her parents argued, and her mother locked her father out of the house. The father came to the daughter's window and asked her to let him in, and she did so.

The next morning, her father asked her to help him hide her mother's body in the freezer in the laundry room of the home.

The girl said she moved out of the home about two weeks ago and was living with a neighbor. She told police that her mother's body was still in the freezer.

NEW YORK — A man accused of abducting his wife and four young children from a Massachusetts apartment where another woman was found fatally stabbed was arrested Wednesday by police, who said the siblings and their mother were in good health.

The family was found in Brooklyn, the New York Police Department said. State police in Massachusetts and New York had issued Amber Alerts for the children, who range in age from 11 months to 3 years.

In Massachusetts, Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said in a news release that police arrested the father, Rodlyn Petitbois, without incident about 6 p.m. as he walked down a Brooklyn street, and that the children and their mother were found safe in a Brooklyn apartment.

Blodgett said earlier that his office was seeking an arrest warrant for Petitbois on a first-degree murder charge. Blodgett said before the arrest the authorities believed Petitbois to be extremely dangerous and possibly armed.

FAYETTEVILLE - The Fayetteville Police said at a press conference today that a typewriter was seized as evidence from the home of Sergeant Edgar Patino, age 27, who has been charged with first degree murder in the killing of Army Specialist Megan Touma in June.

One reason the Touma case has received national attention was that a letter was sent to the Fayetteville Observer newspaper from someone claiming to be the killer. The letter was written in a similar fashion to those seen in the Zodiac Killer cases in California in the 1960's, which were never solved.

The letter taunted police and claimed to be from someone who was a serial killer.

Chief Bergamine disclosed today at the press conference that there were actually two letters in the case, one sent to the Fayetteville Observer and one sent to the Fayetteville Police Department.

Bergamine called the analysis of the letters "critical to this case."

"The letters were used to try and throw off detectives," said lead investigator Joshua Carter of the Fayetteville Police Department. "We have evidence linking the suspect to the letters."

"We felt this letter was typed...to throw us off," concurred Chief Bergamine.

The Fayetteville Police said that they believe a typewriter seized from Patino's home is a key piece of evidence. The letters written to the police and the Fayetteville Observer newspaper were typed on a typewriter.

Suspect in Pregnant North Carolina Soldier's Death Was Baby's Father

A Fort Bragg soldier was arraigned Wednesday on first-degree murder charges in the death of a colleague who North Carolina police say was pregnant with his unborn baby.

Army Sgt. Edgar Patino, 27, told Cumberland County, N.C., Judge Laura Devane that he understood the charges against him and would ask that the court appoint him an attorney.

Patino appeared wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, his hands cuffed in front of him. Devane set his next hearing for Aug. 20.

Earlier Wednesday, police in Fayetteville, N.C., said they zeroed in on Patino after gathering evidence that he wrote a letter to a local newspaper claiming he killed Army Spc. Megan L. Touma, whose decomposing body was found in a motel bathtub.

Among that evidence is a typewriter taken from Patino's residence that investigators say was used to compose the note, Carter told reporters Wednesday. Patino allegedly purchased the typewriter the day before the letter was mailed.

Patino of Hope Mills, N.C., is being held without bond since his arrest at his home Tuesday night. He was arraigned at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Authorities said he is married, which Touma only learned shortly before her death, and admitted to fathering her unborn baby.

Patino also acknowledged being in Touma's hotel room June 13, the last day her hotel room key was used, police said.

Authorities charged Patino with first-degree murder after they took him into custody without incident about 8 p.m., but did not release a motive.

"Right now, the motive is going to be held close due to the fact that this is an ongoing investigation," Carter said.
